Plains Post Office, Georgia Renamed in Honor of Former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn

A heartfelt tribute is coming to the peaceful town of Plains, Georgia — home to just over 500 residents — where the local post office will soon carry the names of two of the town’s most cherished figures: former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

On Wednesday, the post office will officially be renamed the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Post Office, marking a moment of pride for the community. The change comes after Congress passed a bill in 2023 approving the renaming. The dedication ceremony will be held at the Plains Community Center, with members of the Carter family and local leaders expected to attend.

In a statement shared by Fox 5 Atlanta, the U.S. Postal Service said the new name is a way to honor the Carters’ “significant contributions to society” and ensure their legacy inspires future generations to give back and serve others.

Jimmy Carter was born and raised in Plains and returned to live there after leaving the White House in 1981. Today, he and Rosalynn are laid to rest at the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, located at his boyhood home and farm — now a preserved national site.

The dedication is expected to be attended by James “Chip” Carter III, the couple’s son, as well as Lillian Allethea Smith Wall, Rosalynn’s sister, according to reporting by 11Alive.

The effort to rename the post office was led by Georgia Representative Sanford Bishop, with strong support from Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. Ossoff called the renaming a “small but meaningful way” to honor the Carters’ lifelong dedication to public service and humanitarian work.

Jimmy Carter passed away in December 2024 at the age of 100, just a month after the bill was signed into law. Rosalynn Carter had passed earlier, in November 2023, at age 96.

Though his presidency spanned just four years (1977–1981), Carter’s influence extended far beyond the Oval Office. He earned global respect for his humanitarian work, especially with Habitat for Humanity, and for promoting peace, health, and democracy around the world.

During a moving eulogy, President Joe Biden paid tribute to Carter’s extraordinary life, describing him as a man of character, conviction, and compassion.

“A white Southern Baptist who championed civil rights. A Navy veteran who pursued peace. A nuclear engineer who pushed for nonproliferation. A farmer who stood up for clean energy. Through it all, he showed us what character and faith can achieve,” Biden said.

The renaming of the Plains post office stands as a lasting reminder of the values the Carters lived by — humility, service, and a deep love for humanity.
